WALHI Conference to the Reduction of Ecological Disasters
Indonesian Forum for Environment (WALHI) held Indonesian People conference which took place for three days from Monday to Sunday (July, 13) at the Hajj Dormitory in Pondok Gede. The conference attended by around 1,500 people from various non-governmental organizations that cared for farmers, tribal society, youths, fishermen, women, and environment from 33 provinces discussed ecological disaster matters.
WALHI`s executive director, Chalid Muhammad, said that the conference was an initiative to muster the strengths, start "the war" to save the environment and prevent ecological disasters from happening. He was convinced that ecological problems were the triggers of poverty that caused thousands of Indonesian children drop out from schools, increased the crime rates and suicidal cases.
"At least, for the past ten years, it was evident that the government was not serious and was not able to manage ecological disasters. There have been no significant changes in the economic policy that gives priority to big capital investors and exploitations of natural resources," he said. Even, he continued, the people`s constitutional rights to avoid ecological problems are not fulfilled adequately by the government.
Therefore, Chalid hoped that this people conference held for the first time would result in a resolution to manage the disasters that would be submitted to House of the Representatives and the government. Accordingly, the government was expected to improve its disaster management strategy in the future and would immediately give just recompenses to all disaster victims in Indonesia such as Lapindo victims in Sidoarjo, East Java.
Chalid privately invited Dr Zul to attend the conference. Unfortunately, due to Dr Zul`s duty out of town, he delegated seven of his staff to attend the conference. One of his expert staff, Dr Yon Machmudi, said that he really appreciated the forum. He affirmed that the conference held by WALHI was still regarded a momentum to care for environment.
Besides holding the conference, the participants also launched a rally to some government institutions such as the Ministry of Forestry and Plantation and House of the Representatives. They asked the government to take care of a disaster-free environment more seriously by imposing severe sanctions to those who destroyed the balance of environment.
